David Binney
Acclaimed as a considerable and highly individual compositional talent, saxophonist David Binney is one of the most prolific young jazz musicians on the scene today. Winning praise from critics and colleagues alike, David was recently singled out by Jazz Times as one of a handful of "young players who have created an alternative jazzscene... all of whom are playing adventurous, original music."
He has been nominated for Alto Saxophonist of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association, and has garnered the rising star award on alto saxophone from Downbeat Magazine in 2007, and was the receipient of the album of the year prize in 2008 for his recording “Welcome To Life” from the prestigious French jazz journal “Jazz Man”.
David has 14 recordings to his credit as a leader and has performed with numerous music luminaries including Maria Schneider, Jim Hall, Maceo Parker, Uri Caine, Medeski, Martin and Wood, and Edward Simon, and has produced recordings for artists such as Donny McCaslin records, Scott Colley, and Joel Harrison.
His world tours are highly anticipated. In 2009 David toured extensively with his quartet featuring Craig Taborn (piano), Scott Colley (bass), & Brian Blade (drums) in support of his current release “Third Occasion”.
In 2011-12 David Binney will continue touring both his quartets and a special group with the innovative guitarist Wayne Krantz. In addition to concerts – David Binney also offers lectures and master class activities.
