Rodney Kendrick & Rhonda Ross
Rodney Kendrick is that rare breed of pianist-composer - old school in his percussive, rhythmic approach, yet ultimately contemporary and responsive to the current moment. His sound integrates all genres of the African Diaspora. Simply put, Rodney Kendrick’s playing reflects the intricate ancestral history of Black American Classical Music. Rodney's most recent CD is titled, The Colors of Rhythm featuring Curtis Lundy on bass and Cindy Blackman on drums on the Impulse! label.
"Eccentricity is an unusual trait in jazz nowadays, but Rodney Kendrick...is eccentric. He has clearly absorbed the baroque styles of Thelonious Monk and Bud Powell, but there's something more knotty about Mr. Kendrick's playing...He flirts with the avant-garde but is also enamored with the richness of swing...Oddness, after so much predictability in jazz, is almost its own reward; Mr. Kendrick offers that and ability, too." -Peter Watrous NY Times.
After several years working with other musicians, Rhonda Ross and Rodney Kendrick are once again joining forces -- offering a dynamic, inspiring yet intimately honest stage show. In addition to US-based concert halls and music festivals, they recently brought their unique collaboration to Europe with performances in France, Switzerland, Germany, & Spain.
Rhonda Ross is a social-artist who explores questions of ancestry, spirituality, and personal power through her music. Rhonda writes fierce, heart-felt songs in order to examine the world in which she lives and through it all, ask “In the midst of THIS, how can I still be free?”
As the only child of Diana Ross and Motown Founder Berry Gordy, it has become evident that Rhonda not only has the talent, but the significance to carry on her parents’ legacy, all while establishing her own unique musical destination. Rhonda’s most recent release, In Case You Didn’t Know is available everywhere music is sold..
